Video Games (addiction)

  • Many good games are not violent, and are very mentally complex and challenging.
  • Many kids are addicted to video games.  1 of 7 teens show symptoms of video game addiction.  They show anger, think about the games all the time, fight when they have to stop, lie about their addiction, play games in the middle of the night, etc.  Video game addiction is like a drug addiction.
  • Violent video games make kids more aggressive—and have been attributed to some violent tragedies.     (see National Institute for Media and the Family)
  • Pornographic scenes and explicit sexual activity are hidden in some games, easily accessible by teens.
What You Can Do
  • Take a firm stand.  Parents may choose to eliminate killer and sex simulation video games in their homes.
