Native American


The Spokane Tribe of Indians
are of the Interior Salish Group.  The tribe now lives in Wellpinit, Washington, and continues to contribute to the larger community of Spokane, Washington.   

The Spokane Indian Reservation is almost entirely in Stevens County. 

The federal Columbus Day holiday was changed in 2016 by the Spokane City Council to Indigenous Peoples Day in honor of the region's first inhabitants.

  • The Spokane area is home to about 12,000 Native Americans from more than 80 tribes.  (Spokane Tribal College website)

  • The Spokane Indian Reservation is approximately 159,000 acres in size.  

  • More than one-third of American Indian youth live in poverty. 

    There are 566 federally recognized tribal nations in the United States.
