Purpose:
The City of Spokane Parks & Recreation Department provides the community with a variety of sports programs and activities for all ages that emphasize a healthy lifestyle and the value of play.  Join us in our successful programs!
Delivering professional management and prudent care taking for

        80 park areas,
        3,117 acres of land,
        50 playgrounds,
        200 sports facilities and
        40 miles of trails including...
   Riverfront Park, Manito Park, Gaiser Conservatory,

and city-wide public gardens including...
Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens,
 the Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden,
Rose Hill, the Lilac Garden, Duncan Garden,
Joel E. Ferris Perennial Garden,
and John A. Finch Arboretum.
 
Coordinate and schedule events and activities in City parks that in 2009 included:
340 picnic shelter reservations; 113 special event permits; 249 small family gatherings; and 74 weddings.

Provide athletic facilities management and scheduling for
155 separate play fields at 72 different sites. 

Coordinate a full schedule of family entertainment and events including
First Night Spokane, the Bloomsday Post-Race Celebration, Spokaneís 4th of July Community Celebration, Hoopfest, Unity in the Community, Kidís Day, Spokane Falls Northwest Indian Encampment & Powwow and Pig-Out in the Park, plus many outdoor concerts and other community activities.

Operate six aquatic centers and 15 splash pads in parks throughout the City.
Volunteer Opportunities:

Therapeutic Recreation Services Assistant
- Volunteer Ages 16+

We are recruiting passionate volunteers who enjoy assisting people with disabilities to explore and expand their talents. Volunteers can commit to specific TRS programs of interest listed in this guide. Training is included and all class fees are waived for the activities you assist.

Outdoor Trip Assistant - Volunteer Ages 18+ and OnCall

If you have a talent for biking, canoeing, hiking, or other outdoor activities in this guide, consider sharing your skills as an Outdoor Trip Assistant! Training is included and all class fees and equipment costs are waived for the trips you assist.

Corbin Arts Center Summer Camp Internship - Volunteer Ages 18+ and through June 4th-August 11th

Are you looking for a summer internship where you will gain valuable, resume building skills in organization, education, and the arts? This summer internship is open to college students and adults who can commit to work 30 hours a week from June 4 to August 11. 

Hobby Instructor/Entertainer
- Volunteer Age 14+

Do you have a skill in the arts, sports, or entertainment fields?  Our programs are seeking volunteers who may be willing to teach and/or share their talent. Hobby Instructors get the chance to inspire and benefit peopleís lives.

Trail Advocate -Volunteer Age 14+

Volunteer outdoors and learn how to sustain a healthy trail. We are currently seeking people and groups who would like to clear and maintain our local trails. Maintaining trails is also a great form of exercise!

Maintenance Assistant
- Volunteer Age 14+

Gain practical skills in maintenance and keep your local park beautiful. Maintenance Assistants will learn hirable job skills while keeping parks a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.

Friends of Manito Volunteer
- Volunteer Age 14+

The Friends of Manito gives volunteers an opportunity to connect with and learn from some of the areaís best gardeners. TFM is committed to Manito Park through preservation and fundraising events. To learn more about the Friends of Manito go to www.thefriendsofmanito.org/.

Master Pruner Volunteer - Volunteer Age 16+
